Young Voices in Europe
Event Description
Youth Activism and its role in the upcoming EP elections
Over the past few years, Europe has been confronted with severe challenges such as the economic and financial crisis, the movement of refugees, rising populism and a general lack of trust in political decisions. Regional achievements like open borders, common values and economic freedom are suddenly at risk of being taken away and the level of European identity and solidarity has dwindled.
It is important that young active citizens take a stance for a united, strong Europe and actively participate in the decision-making process happening on the local, national and European level. By participating in the political debate taking place around us, we as young active citizens can present sustainable solutions to the challenges our society is currently facing. Civil society, especially young people, are being called upon to play a leading role in building the future of Europe. By overcoming barriers and furthering dialogue with decision-makers, we can advance participatory democracy. Young leaders of today must create the solutions of tomorrow by challenging topics such as political apathy, rising populism, the technological and digital revolution, the empowerment of civil society organizations and social cohesion in Europe.
Lately debates around the EU Copyright Directive show that young citizens do show interest in the future of Europe, but too often politicians and decision-makers do not take their opinions and movements seriously. This debate shall make the voices of young people across all sectors of society heard.
Objectives:
- Present a forum for representatives from civil society organizations, youth movements, politics, business and/or the media to discuss the opportunities available for young people and civil society to participate in political decision-making.
- Give young active citizens the opportunity to make their voices heard and advocate for their political positions.
- Set the stage to connect politics with the civil society so they can exchange ideas and foster collaborative actions for sustainable development in Europe.

2.Youth Activism on EU Copyright Directive/ Article 13
The EU Copyright Directive and especially Article 11 and 13 have led to a huge discussion on several Social Media Channels about censorship, the end of memes and even the end of platforms like Youtube. Often the debate has been highly divisive and young people demonstrating on the streets have not been taken serious by decision-makers. What can we learn from this experience of young people engaging in decision-making processes and what solutions or ideas can you provide? Sign up to a debating team when you have concrete ideas or join the audience in the open forum!
- Keynote on EU Copyright Directive by MEP Tiemo Wölken
- Team Debates on “Learnings from the Article 13 debate on how to make young voices heard.”
